Instructions
Prepare the glass:
Rub the rim of a chilled coupe with a lemon wedge or a little water. Dip it lightly in the sugar and set aside.
Shake:
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the cognac, orange liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup if using.
Shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds, until well chilled.
Strain and serve:
Strain into the prepared coupe.
Express an orange twist over the drink and place it on the rim.
Notes
Do not over-sugar the rim; a thin coating keeps the drink balanced.
Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for a clean, bright finish.
