Somali Beef Suqaar (Spiced Beef and Vegetables)

Jump to recipe ↓
Somali beef suqaar with tender spiced beef, colorful peppers, onion, tomatoes, and fragrant rice.

Suqaar is a popular Somali skillet dish of tender beef and colorful vegetables seasoned with warm spices and served with rice.

The key is a hot pan and small beef pieces: they brown quickly while the peppers and tomatoes soften into a glossy, aromatic sauce.

Cook the beef in batches if needed. Crowding the pan makes it steam instead of browning.

Serving Suggestions

Serve over rice with lime wedges, a fresh tomato salad, or flatbread for scooping up the pan juices.

Recipe Notes

Sirloin, tenderloin, or a well-trimmed beef steak works best. Slice against the grain and reheat leftovers gently.

Notes

  • A short high-heat cook keeps the beef tender; do not simmer it for a long time.
  • Use a mild green chile with the peppers if you like extra heat.
