Serbian Plum Rakija (Šljivovica)

Jump to recipe ↓
A small glass of Serbian plum rakija with ripe plums and a rustic Balkan table setting.

Rakija is Serbia’s treasured fruit spirit, and šljivovica is the classic plum version. This home-style infusion captures the aroma of ripe plums in a simple, approachable format.

Use ripe but firm plums, a clean neutral spirit, and patience. The fruit slowly lends color and fragrance while a small amount of sugar rounds the finish.

Keep the fruit fully submerged and store the jar in a cool, dark place. Taste after two weeks and strain when the plum aroma is vivid but not bitter.

Serving Suggestions

Serve a small chilled pour with bread, cheese, cured meat, ajvar, or pickles. Offer a non-alcoholic plum syrup or sparkling water for guests who do not drink.

Recipe Notes

This is an infusion-style home recipe, not traditional distillation. Store the strained spirit sealed in a cool cupboard for up to 6 months.
