Classic Manhattan Cocktail

Jump to recipe ↓
Classic Manhattan cocktail in a chilled coupe glass with amber whiskey color and a brandied cherry.

The Manhattan is a timeless American cocktail built around rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and aromatic bitters, served cold and crystal clear.

Stirring the drink with ice gives it a silky texture and controlled dilution without the aeration of shaking. A good rye keeps the cocktail lively and structured.

Chill the coupe before mixing and stir until the outside of the mixing glass is very cold. The drink should be cold, not watery.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with one brandied cherry and a small savory snack such as spiced nuts, olives, or a sharp cheese board.

Recipe Notes

Use bourbon for a softer Manhattan or rye for a spicier one. Keep vermouth refrigerated after opening.

Notes

  • A 2:1 whiskey-to-vermouth ratio is a classic starting point; adjust slightly for a drier or richer drink.
  • Avoid shaking a Manhattan, which can make the texture cloudy and overly aerated.
