A michelada is a refreshing Mexican beer cocktail balancing cold lager with lime, savory seasoning, chile, and often tomato-based juice. Recipes vary widely across Mexico and from one household to another.

This version uses a chile-lime rim and a measured blend of tomato juice, Worcestershire, hot sauce, and lime so the beer stays bright rather than heavy.

Add the beer slowly down the side of the glass because the seasoned base foams quickly.

Serving Suggestions

Serve immediately with extra lime and hot sauce. It pairs especially well with tacos, grilled seafood, or salty snacks.

Recipe Notes

Mix the seasoned tomato base ahead, but add chilled beer only when serving. For an alcohol-free version, use a crisp non-alcoholic lager.

Equipment

  • 2 chilled beer mugs
  • Small pitcher
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small plate

Ingredients

Chile-Lime Rim

  • 2 tbsp chile-lime seasoning such as Tajín
  • 1 medium lime cut into wedges

Michelada

  • 24 oz Mexican-style lager very cold
  • 1/2 cup tomato-clam juice or tomato juice chilled
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Mexican hot sauce plus more to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Maggi seasoning or soy sauce
  • 1 cup ice cubes optional

Instructions

Prepare the Glasses:

  • Spread chile-lime seasoning on a small plate. Rub a lime wedge around each chilled mug and dip the rims in seasoning.
  • Add ice to the mugs if using.

Mix and Serve:

  • Stir tomato juice, lime juice, Worcestershire, hot sauce, and Maggi seasoning in a small pitcher.
  • Divide the seasoned base between the mugs. Slowly pour in the cold lager, stir once gently, and garnish with lime wedges. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Tomato-clam juice gives a classic savory profile; plain tomato juice makes the drink vegetarian.
  • Use non-alcoholic lager for a zero-proof michelada.
